Because of aging infrastructure and severe urban growth, companies of UK were putting their money and time to offer more creativity for their work to close the funding gap (Eadie et al. 2013). Therefore, Building Information Modeling or BIM was introduced to enhance productivity, quality and cost-effectiveness by transforming processes like business planning, designing, building and managing goods. BIM can close the funding gap by reducing cost and increasing potential sources of funding with more predictable ROI. With th e help of BIM, infrastructure companies in UK are hoping to upgrade the infrastructure marketplace within in next 20 years (Volk, Stengel and Schultmann 2014). After BMI level 3 document is released, the government of UK continues to drive forward their digital construction agenda, "Digital Build Britain" which was started in February. However, one the area of infrastructure in UK has struggled to cope up with the demands of BIM, which is facilities management or FM. It is suggested that FM teams will be provided a complete knowledge on the BMI model during construction and use of the model to overhaul the efficiency of their management operations. The project life cycle will move forward with time and the same model will be handed back to design teams when the project will demand to be refurbished (Maradza, Whyte and Larsen 2013). However, Capita, like many companies has argued that post-construction knowledge transfer process in not as effective as other companies are hoping. UK Government has already announced and released their BIM mandate that states all the infrastructure companies must adapt level two BIM processes in all central government projects by 2016. After this mandate, most of the companies are reestablishing their company structure to welcome BIM in their system. However, the FM market having different priorities and ways of working has not engaged in the drive for BIM in the same way (Isikdag 2015). It is difficult to expect that clients and facilities management teams will invest in the necessary software, processes or expertise to accommodate BIM models. Especially for small organizations, it is not possible to restructure their whole system. Besides, most of the facilities management teams do not use any specialist software at all. Therefore, it is expected that they will hardly invest in niche design and modeling software like BIM (Kelly et al. 2013). Possibilities of BMI in facilities management Facility management professionals must use building information modeling processes to realize the full potential of the software for delivering value and cost savings over a buildings lifetime. The First FM leaders Forum was build to bring leaders of the FM teams in one place and to help them to discuss issues on BIM and facilities management (Kassem et al. 2015). The primary objective of BIM is to create and maintain facilities that are more efficient having lower carbon emission, lower run costs and more effective and safer places to work and live. The facilities management teams and professionals must allow themselves to understand the BIM technology and its full potential. BIM is transforming their processes to meet the demands of FM. They will have to meet the following things to raise FM profile across the construction industry (Yalcinkaya and Singh 2014) The demonstrating value will be the primary target of BIM which will allow the FM teams to deliver their jobs more efficiently. BMI will clearly elaborate the meaning of lifetime value of buildings. Last but not the least, the biggest challenge of using BMI is the absence of proper contractual and legal framework for implementation. However, it is suggested that in near future legal and liability requirements in the building industry will introduce the contract between the two parties which will be conducted via written and two-dimensional graphical form. The primary legal risk of implementing BIM in FM is to determine the ownership of the BIM data and to protect the data through copyright and other laws (Maradza, Whyte and Larsen 2014). Summary BIM in FM allocation is still considered as an emerging field in UK. The government is forcing the infrastructure companies to adopt BIM for each and every central government projects to save the overall cost. However, the understanding of the challenges and value-adding potential of BIM is FM is essential at this early stage. Therefore, it was important to conduct this research to find out difficulties and values of BIM in facilities management. Research Methodology Introduction After gaining specific knowledge from theories and research works, in this chapter, the researcher has tried to make a suitable research methodology to carry on the entire research work. Selection of Research Strategy (Case Study) This particular research study has been conducted on Northumbria Universitys city campus that is based in Newcastle upon Tyne. This entire university is made up of 32 non-residential buildings and was started in the year 2010. Therefore to gain in depth knowledge, the researcher has conducted an interview with 5 members of the estate department of Northumbria University. Jazz concert with some classmates. The program was entitled Jazz at the Stockbroker. We kind of got lost on the way so we only saw the second half of the show. The next song the Jazz Lab Band played was C-Jam Blues by Duke Elongating, a classic Jazz piece featuring a distinctive motif that is played over and over again.The theme is then developed upon by a few soloists, taking a simple two measure phrase and turning it into great ditty. The trumpet players make great use of Harmon Way-way mutes, keeping in the style of the original song by the Duke. Definitely the most laid back piece with regards to tempo, C-Jam Blues is definitely more bluesy than Jazz. After the blues, the Band went into Tommy Wolfs Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most which ended up morphing into Mercy, Mercy, Mercy by Josef Zanily. It opens with a beautiful slow piano solo which is quickly followed by a beautifully flowing saxophone solo.Definitely a song of polyphony to start, the saxophone soloist keeps going while the rest of the band accompanies quietly in the background. As soon as the solo is over though, the song quickly sped up and the background temporarily took over the melody, before the solo began some great improvisation upon the main theme. After the saxophonist, the drummer takes over for some great rhythmic variations. After a brief intermission, the Jazz Ensemble performed four pieces, which were all more lively, energetic, and engaging than the first half.It was the Jazz Ensembles reference that I would recommend to friends, because it was much more enjoyable to watch and listen to than the Jazz Lab Band. Whether it was because of their bigger numbers or Just a difference in personality of the performers, they were so much more energetic. The Ensembles first piece was Max by John Clayton, which gradually adds instruments in and gives a lot of attention to the saxophones by giving most of the melody and theme to them, unless it is being played by everyone. The trumpets break out their Harmon mutes again, which really does add a great layer of depth to the piece.The tempo was more casual than the other pieces which was a great way to relax into the second half. The next piece was Lambed Leap by Fred Strum, which quickly crescendos before a duet between the keyboardist and a trumpeter. Following them was a great guitar solo which was quite enjoyable, due to how great jazz guitar sounds. The theme was recurring, with an BABY pattern throughout, with the B theme being improvisations upon the theme by soloists. The second to last piece was Ice Castles by Marvin Heimlich, which was an incredible piece and was rich in melody and harmonies.Originally intended to be performed by a trumpet player Dave Detailer, it was performed instead by the director Jason Grafton due to Mr.. Detailer getting stuck in Washington, D. C. From giving the piece a nice calm blues feeling. The piece is almost a concerto due to the nature of the trumpet solo. However, it was a great example of polyphony as the ensemble built underneath him, gradually growing in the number of people playing and in dynamic level, all the while accompanying the main trumpets theme. The final piece of the concert was Minoan, which is an intriguing and difficult piece byPat Methuen and Lyle Mays. Starting with a swirling almost sleeker melody. The song is led by a saxophone soloist until a trombone player takes over and leads the group. A theme and variation of sorts, the main melody is constantly developed upon by various instrumental parts, the tempo changing as they go, starting from a relaxed andante and quickly working their way up. The trumpets final use of the Harmon mute was quite enjoyable; a personal favorite of mine. All in all, it was a great concert, with much to talk about! It gave me a new appreciation for Jazz music.

What Makes Business Communication a Success Introduction Business communication is vital for success in all business. Success in this context means, being able to accomplish a particular task or to achieve a specific objective. Good business communications in relationships either with fellow staffs or customers is needed in order to prosper. Business success can be measured in terms of the practicability of business relationships which is directly proportional to the quality of communication (Harvard Business School Press, 2003:122). In this paper I will look at the ways of achieving successful communication, the difference between slogans and media sound bites and how slogans are used to draw audience attention. Steps in Achieving Successful Business Communication The first step in successful business communication is to identify the communication weaknesses in a business. This can be through brainstorming where challenges facing the business can be identified. Such challenges can be obtained through reviewing the day to day activities of the business (Guffer Almonte, 2009:4). Some questions may serve as a guideline, these include: Have employees been provided with a good working environment? Are they happy with what they are doing? Has the business been able to satisfy all the clients? Is proper information provided to all stakeholders? Is there good flow of conversations? After reviewing the above issues, then the business has to address these challenges giving the first priority to the most troublesome. By addressing the challenges one by one the relationship in general is strengthened. There is need to develop proactive and constructive communication skills in order to tackle these challenges. Once a challenge is chosen, one has to consider the issues that make it a challenge then address them systematically. For example, a business may be faced by a challenge of unsatisfied employees; issues causing this may be inadequate communication, lack of a safe working environment or poor organization structure. If such issues are addressed, then that challenge will be tackled. Communication means more than just giving out messages; it involves speaking, listening, sending, and receiving messages (Guffey, Rogin and Rhodes, 2009: 4). In communication, listening is the key to success and most of the time listening gets people into problems because they do not practice it. For business communication to be successful, listening has to be proficient. Listening simply means holding back ones judgment and allowing answers to come from outside. When a business is faced with challenges, there are people who already know what the problem is. Allowing them to give their ideas concerning that particular problem really helps. It is not always easy to hold back and allow others to give their opinion but if this is practiced it results in business communication success (Krizan et al 2007:82). After listening and taking notes from the suggested solutions, a business can now move forward and define what it wants to achieve. This is a very critical stage and one has to be proactive in order to achieve success. One has to think about the benefits to be achieved and how they will affect the success of the business. A suggested solution may be to improve the businesss relationship with its customers. Strategies to achieve this includes but not limited to answering calls in a polite manner, addressing all concerns, listening to customers, responding to complains, providing information, and thanking customers for their support (Stone Jacobs, 2007:179). This helps in earning customers confidence. The next step is to prepare a communication plan that is proactive. This is a plan that is prepared after defining a business success and getting solution from the listening activities. Things to be included in the plan include: taking employees to seminars that cover topics such as customer care, organizing get together between employers and employees, rewarding employees, holding regular meetings, including major stakeholders in business decision, assurance to personal service among others. This plan does not concentrate in solving past troubles but in laying down a good foundation that guarantees business future success (Pride et al 2009:169). A communication plan should take into consideration the availability of resources and whether the business aims at a long term or short term objective. Once a communication plan has been prepared, the business now focuses on the implementation. The expected result should be kept in mind and the main constitute of the plan reviewed to make sure they are in line with the expected result. The implementation process should involve as many people as possible but it should have one person who is accountable to it. Once the implementation process is complete, the business should take time to reflect on what it has just done and consider whether it has been able to meet the objective of the plan. The final step of a successful business communication is evaluation of the results. One should go back two steps and review what was the objective and aim of carrying out the plan. The results should be evaluated to make sure that they are in line with the expectation. Once the business is satisfied with the result, it should take time to thank everyone who participated in the whole process and reward itself. Sound Bites Sound bites are brief statements that clearly state the aims, purpose, or nature of a certain product. They are taken from an interview of a person with authority such as a politician, a director, or a marketing manager of a certain company. Sound bites are considered to be the most important point from the interview by the people responsible for editing it and they are inserted into the news broadcast (Whitaker et al 2004: 289). For them to be effective they must use vivid self-motivated language, be brief and clear, outstanding and easy to repeat (Mclean, 2010:2). Slogans Slogans are short and memorable phrases that are used in advertising movements. They are aimed at drawing peoples attention to particular features of a product. The main purpose of a slogan is to emphasize an aspect that a company may wish to be remembered such as marketing its corporate image, product, or its consumer foundation. An effective slogan should give an overview of the benefits of a certain product, it should be direct and brief, give an implausible notion about the product or brand, and it should make the consumer feel a need for the product (Shimp, 2008:220). A slogan portrays the best image of a product. It should make a product appear as the best in the market. Examples of such slogans include: Guinness is good for you, Gillette- à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the best a man can getà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , Persil -à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“washes whiterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . Some slogans used in water conservation include à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“conserve water and conserve lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“cut one tree, plant twoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“rainwater tank, wont break the bankà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . The message in slogans is aimed for a specific purpose and for specific audience. An example of a reproductive slogan is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“keep that school girl completionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  Palmolive soap. For survival à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“obey your thirstà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  spirit, for a specific audience à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“choosy mother choose Jifà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  Jif peanuts butter (Saad, 2007:156). The Monterey Bay Sea Otters There are a number of sea otters who are an important part of this world and they form a fairly large population and that is why it is felt that they should be preserved at all costs. They are an important source of earning for the people and they are also important in the sense that they provide an important source of earning to the people and their is an entire group of people who use this field as their source of earning. Besides the population of these otters keeps fluctuating and it has to be maintained because if the number fluctuate exponentially and if they get out of hand they can damage the ecological and the environmental balance of the world. Similarly the fishing and the killing of these otters can cause the damage to the balance because just like the excess of anything can cause a problem similarly the excess supply can cause a lot of major problem as well. These otters vary in sizes and this is an unchartered territory with a number of para sites who do vary in species and sizes and they all have their purposes and pros and cons and they impact our life and the balance of the world in a different manner. As the size varies so does the importance of the otters and the smaller ones might be innocuous while the larger ones can be the source of food as well and some of the larger species can also act as the predators and they act as a deterrent for the other species because they keep the check over the other species. They may pose a hazard of some type in some of the cases but their habitats and their productive cycles are all the things that need to be considered by us as human beings. Similarly their eating habits and appetites can alter and impact our world and our actions and reactions an... ...nd we can predict the process of evolution and we will be able to go ahead of our own times. Otters have a huge family which have a number of sublets and a number of branches which are all interlinked and which share a similar history and that is why we need to prioritize the study and we need to study all of them in some detail. That is why in the recent past it is being felt that the time has come for to bring together information from a wide array of sea otter research. We also need to study and assess the risk of disease and threats to the wild sea otter population. Preservation of their health should be our prime concern. Carol Gilligan: interpretation of “Feminine Ethics” Essay

To start with Carol Gilligan is considered to be one of the most famous psychologists in the United States and in the world. The author of the â€Å"feminine ethics† was born in New York in 1936. Her career as a future psychologist started with the presenting of the doctoral thesis at the Harvard University in 1964. For a decade she was working with the great theorist of moral development, Lawrence Kohlberg, but then she began criticizing his works. In her famous book â€Å"In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women’s Development† (1982) Gilligan presents a revolutionary idea, she gives women rights to choose and she associates them with care and in some cases with the motherhood. Still, there were some reasons why Gilligan began to criticize Lawrence Kohlberg’s work. Firstly, she considered him to have rather a narrow approach to the problem of moral values. Secondly, Lawrence Kohlberg examined only men’s moral principles and paid no attention to women’s feeling and in such way, Kohlberg showed â€Å"biased opinion against women†. Thirdly, Gilligan felt that women should have the voice and she wanted to present a controversial approach to women’s rights and moral values. Fourthly, Kohlberg in â€Å"terms of influence on a human relationship† considered men’s rights and rules to be at the higher stage than women’s (Gilligan, 1982). Lawrence Kohlberg was not the only scientist whose works gave Gilligan ground for her future work. She laid her research on Freud’s and Erickson’s works. Thus, while discussing women’s moral senses Sigmund Freud, stressed that they are underdeveloped, because of women’s dependence upon their mothers (Lawrence, 2008). Another famous moralist and theorist, Erik Erickson believed that the process of women’s development is successful only in case of separation from the mother and the family. Thus, the board schools for girls are a good possibility for a young lady to develop moral senses. Still, Erickson thought that if a woman did not come through the process of self-development she would be lacking some major senses, which make her a real woman (Boeree, 2004). Criticizing the above-mentioned theories Gilligan understood that her goal was to present a new approach to the women’s moral senses. Her theory comprises three aspects of women’s moral development: selfish, social and principled morality. According to Gilligan (1982) â€Å"Women must learn to deal with their own interests and to the interests of others†. The above-mentioned theory has laid the basis for the Gilligan’s Ethics of Care and Feminine approach to the women’s role in the society. I look closer to the proposed three-stage theory some similarities to Freud’s one will be found. Thus, Gilligan presents the following ideas as for the first level – the level of â€Å"self†: â€Å"†¦ the self is the sole object of a woman’s concern. This self is a beleaguered self: a powerless and disappointed self, so afraid of being hurt that it prefers isolation to connectedness†¦.this is a self that wants above all to survive† (Gilligan, 1982) Still, the first level is the level of â€Å"wish†; and when the woman makes the transition from â€Å"wish† to â€Å"necessity†, from â€Å"the selfishness† to â€Å"willful decision† and to â€Å"the responsibility of moral choice† she will reach the second level – the level of moral development. The main motive which leads the woman to move from the first to the second level is a desire to establish connections with others and to participate in social life. According to Gillian â€Å"†¦the woman of the second level is the conventional, nurturing woman who equates goodness with self-sacrifice and who tries to subjugate her wants to those of other people†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Gilligan, 1982). The moral development of a woman according to Gilligan can continue to the third level in the case when a woman suppresses her wants and as a result, she reaches a destructive boiling point. Thus, Gillian writes: â€Å"†¦to avoid becoming a resentful, angry, even hateful person, a woman needs to push beyond level two to level three of moral development, where she will learn how to care for herself as well as for others†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Gilligan, 1982) So in case when a woman moves to the third level the process of making decisions is a two-sided procedure. From one hand woman takes into consideration her own desire and from the other hand she looks at others’ interests and tries to find a happy medium. Gilligan characterizes the move from the second level to the third level as a transition from goodness to truth. She writes: â€Å"A woman moves from pleasing others – being the conventionally good, always self-sacrificing woman – to recognizing her own needs as part of any relationship. In sum, a woman attains moral maturity when she stops opposing her needs in favor of others’, simultaneously recognizing the falseness of this polarity and the truth of her and others’ interconnectedness†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Gilligan, 1982). As it becomes clear Gilligan believes that women look at moral senses through the prism of caring about others and responsibilities to others. Still, Gilligan uses rather a narrow approach to the women’s moral senses. It is obvious that women are living in society and fulfill their roles according to the choice made. But Gilligan ties ethic of caring with the relationship and responsibility and here is the greatest confusion. Thus, from one hand women make choice on their own from the other hand they are to look at their family, relatives, and friends. Can there some misunderstanding be found? Nevertheless comparing the Gilligan work â€Å"In a different voice† with the feminine approach which is presented in the work, it should be stressed that everything is circling around care, which the woman is obliged to give. But is it a real feminism? It can’t be so. Still, it should be stressed that Gilligan’s work influenced a lot of works in the sphere of womenà ¢â‚¬â„¢s morality and feminism. Analyzing Gilligan’s work Omonia Vinieris, the representative of idealism, writes that proposed three-level development of moral senses cannot be applied to the modern society because of the masculine â€Å"competition and self-interest†. She stresses that â€Å"sensitivity and kindness were never equated with human goodness† and as a result presented â€Å"feminine approach cannot be applied to the rational and intellect male-world† (Vineries, 2002) Using Gilligan’s ethics of care Brenda Green proposes to apply feminist care to the nursing practice. She thinks that care can be applied to politics and can be associated with gender and power. Moreover Green advocates the idea that the ethics of care should be rooted in the moral frameworks of responsibility and relationships rather than rights and rules and that any care orientation is inseparable from contextual circumstances rather than being a formal and abstract system of thought. Additionally, care should be grounded in the daily activity of life rather than a set of universal principles. (Green, 2012) Houser, Wilczenski, and Ham (2006) using the â€Å"Ethics of care† suggest that feminism ideology includes two primary streams of â€Å"woman-centered† approaches which are relevant to care ethics: the feminine and the feminist. ‘Feminine’ refers to the exploration of women’s unique voice and advocates for an ethic of care. ‘Feminist’ refers to the resistance against male domination and advocates for equal rights. Both approaches seek to validate the importance of experience, understand the destructiveness of oppression, and eliminate gender and social inequality. Halwani (2003) in his turn suggests that while using care equal weight should be given in our moral deliberations. The main aim of the family from his point of view is responding to the needs of the loved ones. Such an approach implicates partialism or discrimination in care to others. Although partialism seems arbitrary, it does assign greater importance to the protection of one’s own interests and to the interests of those the person cares about, over the protection of the welfare of others, particularly those who are strangers. Coming to conclusion it should be stressed that Carol Gilligan has presented the new approach to the development of women’s moral senses and feministic ideas as for the women’s role in the society. Weber’s book ‘The Protestant Work Ethic and Spirit of Capitalism’ looked at how religious ideas of Calvanism brought about social change. He spotted two things; Predestination: This is the idea that your life and whether you’re going to heaven are predetermined by God. Calvanism believed only a few were chosen for heaven. This created anxiety – no one knew if they were one of the chosen. Ascetic Ideal: Working hard in your job was a solution to this anxiety. Success might be a sign that you were chosen for heaven. Earl Calvinists lived a strict and disciplined life to hard work and simple pleasures. Protestant Ethic emphasized norms and values such as hard work, profit, avoiding ill health and self-indulgence. This allowed industrialisation to take place. Weber claimed that the ascetic ideal helped create an ethic of disciplined hard work. This is the spirit of capitalism. Not only was there a build-up of capital, there was the right work ethic for capitalism. Religion indirectly bought about social change. However, Eisenstadt (1967) contradicts Weber’s theory by claiming capitalism occurred in Catholic countries like Italy before the Protestant Reformation happened, and before the ideas of Calvin ever came out.
